“How Many Grown-ups Do You Have?”
A book about (unconventional) families.
How many grown-ups does it take to make a family?
This book is for children of unconventional/non-traditional families and for anyone who wants to introduce a child to the idea that families come in all shapes and sizes.
Lovingly hand-illustrated, the book features a diversity of family configurations, including queer families, multi-generational families, polyamorous families, single-parent families, co-parenting families, an adoptive family, a step-family, and a foster family. Each spread of the book describes a child’s family in simple language, while making it clear that no family is “unusual”.
This book also contains a brief simple-language “Family Vocabulary” as a conversation-starter about family diversity.

What is it?
This picture book for the youngest readers has beautiful watercolor illustrations and features very diverse/”uncommon” families. The reader will learn that even though every family is unique, no family is unusual.

Who is it for?
This book is for toddlers and their families. It is especially intended for kids of “non-traditional” families, but would also benefit any family that aims to expose their children to diversity and inclusivity early.

Celebrate Pride!
The book launched during Pride Month (June) 2023 and celebrates diverse families, including several 2SLGBTQ+ and polyamorous families featured.

Every page is lovingly hand-illustrated by the author, using watercolor paints and warm, bright tones that are sure to keep the attention of the youngest of readers. Each spread showcases a different family. Depending on the age and attention span of your child, you can explore the pages in any order, or even just one at a time. There is no set order in which the pages are to be read.
