Unpopular opinion: Project Management isn’t a tool or even a process, it’s a mindset.
I’m seeing lots of Project Manager job postings that seem like the hiring manager is looking mainly for previous experience with a particular PM tool.
Software, Gantt charts, task checklists – is that project management?… Are we losing sight of project management-oriented *thinking*?
In my opinion, a true project management mindset means:
1. Thinking strategically, not just tactically. It’s not simply about getting things done, but ensuring the *right* things get done.
2. Managing uncertainty, not just schedules. Projects *never* go 100% as planned… well, at least in my experience… 😬 The best project managers don’t just track tasks; they adapt, problem-solve, and keep teams moving forward.
3. Focusing on outcomes, not just output. It’s easy to complete tasks; it’s harder to deliver value. Good project management isn’t about checking boxes, it’s about driving impact.
4. Leading, not just coordinating. Tools don’t run projects, people do. A project management mindset means understanding how to align stakeholders, navigate conflicts, and (imagine this!) inspire teams.
Project management isn’t a software license or a methodology, it’s a philosophy of execution, accountability, and adaptability.
I think you *can* hire an entry-level Project Manager without prior PM software experience, I truly do. Software can be learned. Your company’s specific project management process can be taught. But the mindset has to be there.
Prove me wrong. 😄
